This notebook presents Gozo Yoshimasu’s transcription of the LP “Jishincho (The Bird of Mercy Flutters and Spreads Its Bony Wings)” by Tatsumi Hijikata, founder of Ankoku Butoh an avant-garde form of Japanese dance theatre. Yoshimasu received the LP in 1986 from Hijikata’s wife as a condolence gift and continued developing these transcriptions during his stay in São Paulo, Brazil, from 1993 to 1995. Archival Fund

Gozo Yoshimasu graduated from Keio University and debuted in 1964 with Departure. Renowned as a leading innovator of contemporary poetry, he has published numerous poetry collection such as Golden Psalms, Osiris, God of Stone, and Spiral Song. A pioneer of poetry performance, he has presented works worldwide, crossing poetry, film, photography, and objects. He has received the Medal with Purple Ribbon, the Japan Art Academy Prize, and is a Person of Cultural Merit. Personal data
